Exceptional Education: Silicon Valley's Schools Top National Rankings

Silicon Valley is known for its role in fashioning the high-tech tools of tomorrow. But beyond corporate campuses, luxury housing, and a picturesque locale, one factor may prove more attractive than any other: the schools.

There’s no doubt that Silicon Valley is the land of technological opportunity. After all, Apple, Alphabet (parent of Google), and Facebook call the place home. However, it's not just the lure of lucrative employment that convinces people to put down roots throughout California’s high-tech corridor.

The area boasts some of the state’s top schools.

Utilizing a dozen data points, including stats from the U.S. Department of Education, to measure the best schools in the country, the team at Niche.com has released its 2019 rankings of the best school districts in California for the coming year.

Silicon Valley dominates the top of the rankings, with the region landing as the number one and two districts in the state. Leading the list is the Palo Alto Unified School District, which is also ranked as the 12th best district in the United States. In the second spot is Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District.

Three other public districts found their way into the top 25: No. 9 Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District, No. 15 Fremont Union High School District, and No. 23 San Mateo Union High School District. The two former schools received grades of A+, while San Mateo received an A.

Although the availability of excellent public education often factors as a primary must-have when searching for new housing, those looking for private schools in Silicon Valley won’t be disappointed.

In fact, the area’s private institutions had an even better showing, with seven rated in the state’s top 25 private schools and three landing in the top 20 in the nation.

The three nationally ranked schools include Stanford Online High School (No. 3 in state, No. 11 U.S.), The Harker School (No. 5 in state, No. 17 U.S.), and Castilleja School (No. 6 in state and No. 18 U.S.).

The other four private schools to rank in California’s top 25 are No. 9 Crystal Springs Uplands School, No. 13 The Nueva School, No. 17 Menlo School, and No. 22 Woodside Priory School.

The well-regarded educational ecosystem also extends to higher learning. All of the schools listed, both public and private, sit within a 15-mile radius of Stanford University, which Niche ranks as the top college in California and the second-best in the U.S. An hour north of Stanford is the University of California-Berkeley, the No. 6 university in the state, as well as the No. 5 public university in the U.S.

Considering the quality of the area's schools, many of Silicon Valley's future employees and homebuyers will have a decidedly local flavor.
