San Mateo

San Mateo is a melting pot of traditional heritage and cultural diversity.

Welcome to San Mateo

San Mateo is a melting pot of traditional heritage and cultural diversity. The fascinating city has emerged to become an affluent community in the Silicon Valley, with great neighborhoods, parks and amenities that make San Mateo an ideal destination to live and do business.

Famed Downtown

One of the largest downtowns in the Peninsula, downtown San Mateo is conveniently located midway between San Francisco and Palo Alto. The pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with street murals dotted with eclectic color and art is home to thriving businesses such as Century 12 –a 12-screen movie theater complex. Many historic buildings dating from the 1890s to the 1930s also still stand on this bustling spot, giving downtown San Mateo its old-world charm.
Downtown San Mateo is also an award-winning dining destination. One of its most popular restaurants is All Spice –a modern Indian eatery housed in a 1906 Victorian house. A truly unique gem in the Bay Area, All Spice has an intimate dining room that only fits a few tables. The restaurant’s Chef’s Tasting Menu comes highly recommended. The seasonal and oft-changing series of small dishes include epicurean delights such as Thai-Inspired Octopus and Wagyu Zabuton Steak.

Nature-Inspired Amenities

San Mateo parks are natural resources, providing approximately 200 acres of open space with ample miles of accessible paths and trails. Among its nine larger community parks, 16.3-acre Central Park is a San Mateo landmark with tennis courts, a baseball field, a playground, and the popular Japanese Garden. Designed by landscape architect Nagao Sakurai of the Imperial Palace of Tokyo, the Japanese Garden is one of the most beautiful gardens in California that features a koi pond, bamboo grove, and a granite pagoda.
In Central Park, one will also find the headquarters of the San Mateo Arboretum Society that aims to preserve San Mateo’s rich horticultural heritage. Rose gardens, as well as old pine, cedar, oak and redwood trees planted over 100 years ago, can be enjoyed here.
Coyote Point Park is another recreational area that provides a plethora of fun activities such as windsurfing, swimming, boating, fishing, biking, and picnicking. The 670-acre park also includes a massive, castle-and-dragon-themed Magic Mountain Playground as well as the world-class science and wildlife center, CuriOdyssey Museum where kids and the kids at heart can get up-close to wild animals or participate in interactive exhibits. Families can also visit the marina and its breakwater to enjoy views decorated with colorful boats, windsurfers, as well as airplanes from the San Francisco International Airport.
Golf enthusiasts will also have no problem calling San Mateo home where they can book their tee times at the public Poplar Creek Golf Course and the members-only Peninsula Golf & Country Club.
